The Virgin’s Chosen Dragon begins the Mysteries of Dragon Island series.  We’ll meet 22-year-old Eden, who has spent her life firmly under her controlling mother’s thumb.  Her mother has Eden’s life mapped out for her, but this summer she’s experiencing freedom for the first time on this enchanted island.  Theo is the youngest son in a privileged family. He’s been a bit of a player in his youth, but has made the decision to settle his life, to find his purpose, and this vacation to his friend’s new island resort is the time he’s taking to sort through his thoughts and come to a decision.  Both their lives are about to change.

I don’t do negative reviews, I’ll just not write anything before I’ll bash an author’s blood, sweat, and tears about their book baby.  I do, however, leave disappointed reviews, and that’s really what I’m feeling… disappointed.  

At its core, The Virgin’s Chosen Dragon is a good book.  The characters are likeable, their romance enjoyable, for the most part.  While there is an age gap, it’s not decades, just 8 years.  Yet.  I felt like I was reading a contemporary romance for the majority of this book.  We’re told that Theo is a dragon shifter.  Told.  But we only see his dragon in rescue mode for a few pages.  No inner dialogue with his dragon, no chance to understand that he’s a shifter who is falling for a human woman.  Just two people falling in love with a bit of a time-slip for a few chapters, then back to normal with confrontations with the parents.  As I said, a basically good story, yet I want the shifter aspect in a shifter romance.  It’s what draws me to the genre.  I should give the series a chance, should pick up the next story and see if I still feel this disconnect from the shifter world… but I have no intense need to know what comes next.

Having said that, I have read this author before and enjoyed her work.  Perhaps this series is just not for me; sometimes that happens.  Any review is simply one person’s opinion, and this is mine.  To know how you’d feel about The Virgin’s Chosen Dragon by Serena Meadows, I’d encourage you to discover that for yourself and not take anyone else’s opinion to heart.
