Kingston Chase is buried underground in a shifter prison called Cold Foot.

Little does he know, an unexpected ally is breaking into the prison to set some of the inmates free, including the woman who has consumed his mind since the day she was brought down to his cell and introduced into the secret program he is a part of. If the humans knew what was really going on in this shifter prison, it would be all over the news, and Damon Daye seems to want just that. Every shifter knows Damon is not the dragon to mess with, but if King plays nice for a little while, he can secure a free ticket into one of the most coveted Crews in the world. Too bad he doesn’t work well with others. Katrina could, though, and he would give his ticket to her in a heartbeat if it meant she would forgive him for what happened between them. King has been living a solitary life for years now, and being thrown into a team is jarring to the massive silverback gorilla that dwells inside of him. If he can stay out of Cold Foot, he could tie up all the loose ends from his previous life, but inside the walls of that prison, there is something he cannot live without.

She was brought to Cold Foot Prison after she helped her lion Pride attack Damon’s Mountains, and now her life is at a dead end. She has so many regrets and apologies to make, but she can’t do any of that from the cold walls of this place. When the first dragon roar rattles the walls of her cell, she knows something big is happening. What she doesn’t realize is that she is about to be pulled from her dark destiny and thrust into a second chance she never expected. She has an old friend on the outside pulling some serious strings to get her a shot at making it into a Crew that others would die to be a part of, but her emotions are swinging high and wide as she struggles to adjust to life outside of the walls of Cold Foot. The one steadying factor? A silverback gorilla shifter she met one horrible day inside, who seems determined to protect her for reasons she doesn’t understand. King is huge, and dominant, and a fighter, but he’s pushing her toward the people she went to war with in Damon’s Mountains, and she can’t figure out his motive. For the life of her, she can’t figure out whether he is a friend or a foe. All she knows is that he is important to her and to her animal, and he gives her hope. For a shifter like her, hope is terrifying.

Cold Foot King is the first title in the Wreck’s Mountains series, a connection to the Damon’s Mountains universe, as it brings us Katrina’s and King’s compelling romance.  At the Cold Foot Prison, shifters are being tortured and made part of experiments, completely against how the prison should have been run.  Yes, these people did harm, and most deserve exactly the punishment that was meted out to them, but not this.  When Damon decided to oust what was happening at Cold Foot, even if it meant burning the place to the ground with his and his crew’s dragon fire, that meant that so many shifters, those who had been experimented on, were out in the world again.  There was a chance that some would become part of a new crew, but not everyone.  Kat and King had met in that horrendous prison, were just two of the many shifters who were part of those hideous experiments.  They formed a bond of sorts and gravitated towards each other once outside.  But, in spite of the growing bond between them, not everything is going perfectly for them… and choices must be made, hard ones that could change the course of their lives.

I will always love going back into the Damon’s Mountains universe, and Cold Foot King was no exception.  Kat had made a choice to follow someone’s footsteps that gained her a boatload of trouble.  She’s trying to make amends, but part of her strength comes from her relationship with King.  And it looks like he’s not going to be with her for much longer.  Watching this couple begin to heal, to put their pasts behind them as they chose a far different future, was an emotional journey.  I liked them individually and as a couple.  There are rough times ahead for King and Katrina, but together they can face anything.  If you love a well-written, compelling, steamy, emotional romance that has intense action moments and tender ones as well, then you’d love Cold Foot King by T.S. Joyce.
