If Bear My Fate is any indication of what is to come in the new Hero Mine series – then we’re in for one heck of a ride.
This prelude story is truly the world builder of this series. I strongly suggest that you be patient with this one because we are delving into a brand new world here. We have bear shifters, yes. We also have druids, witches, Templar and demons. This is a world with it’s own lore, it’s own rules and far more than simply a shifter romance… this is building suspense for what is to come in the series a few decades in the future. It is a puzzle to figure out the good guys from the truly bad guys and those just out for their own selves. Frankly, I found the premise fascinating, but then I enjoy a good mystery and in some ways that is what Bear My Fate is. I believe, for what this series seems to be creating, that a world building introductory story – a prelude – was absolutely necessary – and welcomed in order to not be lost when the series begins in earnest. Should you continue on with the series (which I strongly recommend) it would be wise to remember some tidbits of the plot as you move forward… for not everything is wrapped up, this is a happy for now ending for Jack and Eva for there is much more to come for this couple and their family.
Eva spent her young life being shuffled through the foster care system. She’d been left on the steps of a hospital in a box with only her first name written on it. Abandoned by her mother for reasons she’s never understood, Eva got through those younger years and made her own life eventually. When she is suddenly snatched off of the street, taken to a hidden warehouse and presented with a woman who is said to be her mother, then sent on a quest to find something these evil men want in order to save her mother’s life and perhaps her own – well, life just got complicated and let’s face it, weird. Her instincts, voices in her mind, something is sending her in the right direction to find this thing. Yet what she discovers is beyond her imagination or even belief. Nothing is as it seems and her life is about to change in drastic ways that she could never have imagined.
Jack is the eldest of his brothers, bear shifters who do grunt work, clean up nasty situations and unexpected dangers for the ruling Council. Druids rule this world and they are very strict about the tiers of importance which puts shifters pretty much near the bottom. Jack and his squad are out on a mission when he picks up an unusual scent, human yet not totally and his mate. Well, that puts a whole new spin on this clean up operation. Soon he will come face to face with Eva and will need all of his considerable skills to calm her, take control of the situation and begin to figure out just what the heck is happening in his world. Changes are coming, and Jack will do everything in his power to protect those he loves. Anything.
Bear My Fate is such an intriguing story, full of layers that need to be peeled away. Lots of people with hidden agendas and dangers far more than these characters have ever come across before. It’s rich in details yet not truly complicated – you simply need to allow this world to build itself around you as you read. I enjoyed this prelude to the series very much. I’m about to start the next story which will take place about 25 years in their future Since this story is set in 1995 I have to admit to a few chuckles at how far technology has come since then.
I would highly recommend this one. I believe it’s going to be a stunning series if this beginning is any indication. Yet, this is going to be a series where you need to read it in order – so get in on the start of quite the adventure with Bear My Fate and get ready for an amazing ride.
