In the uncharted territory on the edges of the human lands, a secret country exists.
A country of bear shifters.
Welcome to Bear Nation, where four distinct clans of bear shifters live behind wardlines that protect them from the prying eyes of full humans.
Grizzly shifter Ike Cannon proudly calls the Mountain District his home, and he’ll do so until the day he dies. If only he could find a lifemate to call the Mountains home along with him.
Despite his longing to settle down, Ike hasn’t found anyone who can handle his gruff, serious side. Things only get more complicated when the Mountain District’s entire power supply is in jeopardy, and the neighboring Forest District refuses to help.
As the alpha’s best friend, Ike has his hands full. Who has time for love while trying to navigate a crisis situation? And yet, Ike’s inner bear goes wild whenever Emilia Ellis crosses his path.
Emilia is loud and outgoing—everything that Ike is not. He does his best to avoid her and the question of why his bear yearns for her. But when she is invited to an emergency summit to save the Mountain District, Ike can no longer avoid her.
The more time he spends with her, the more he realizes he’s falling hard for her, despite her wildness. But can wild Emilia ever love the quiet, brooding type, or are their hearts too different to find common ground?

Title: A Mountain’s Heartbeat
Series: Bear Nation Shifters #1
Author: Sloane Meyers
Published: April 5, 2024
My Rating: 4.5 stars
A Mountain’s Heartbeat begins the Bear Nation Shifters series with an intriguing look into a world (country) that is divided into Districts, supposedly under their own control, yet mainly under the dictatorship of one powerful shifter… one who considers himself a king who no one controls at all.
When the magical wardlines and the power grid that protect each district from detection, keeping its citizens safe from members of the human world slipping past their border, begin to show serious signs of failure, the Mountain District reaches out for help. As the power grid falls into disrepair, needing help from the other districts is the only way the people of the Mountain District can hope to survive the coming winter. Only to discover that one power-grabbing shifter has almost convinced the other Districts that there is no real problem, that the Mountain District is simply lazy, and is expecting everyone else to come to their aid when it’s completely unnecessary.
Nothing could be further from the truth, but it’s going to be an uphill, ongoing battle to fight for the survival of their home… or face secession into the wannabe king’s district, which would be the absolute worst thing for the citizens of the Mountain District.
Ike and Emilia are, on the surface, as opposite as two people could possibly be. Ike is serious, completely focused on helping his Alpha fight for the survival of their home against unbearable odds. Emilia is headstrong, outgoing, and pretty much a thorn in Ike’s side. Even though they both want the same thing for the Mountain District, their approaches are far different. To complicate matters, their off-the-charts attraction to each other is getting in the way of finding a solution… or at least Ike feels that way. Emilia just wants the stubborn shifter to acknowledge what they could be to each other, even in the midst of a crisis.
I enjoyed A Mountain’s Heartbeat. It’s an intriguing look into a world that captured my imagination. Of course, there is world-building, which is necessary when being introduced to the problems this world faces, but I didn’t find it overwhelming in the least. If you enjoy a grumpy/sunshine kind of relationship, then Ike and Emilia fit that situation perfectly. Watching them get past their differences to realize they are exactly what each other needs in a lifemate was an emotional, passionate journey that I completely enjoyed. Their story is well-written, emotional, passionate, and full of intrigue. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
